Marking 20 years of Hingston Studio, a product collaboration and exhibition with Paul Smith explored our music archive, to create a collection of limited edition, ready-to-wear pieces.
Working closely with the Paul Smith design team and three of the studio’s long-time collaborators, the collection features pieces with Nick Cave, Chemical Brothers and Massive Attack. A midnight blue velour bomber features iconography from Lovely Creatures, whilst the Chemical Brothers’ acid bright mohair is adorned with the graphics from Born In The Echoes. Referencing early punk culture, Tom Hingston and Robert del Naja customised three vintage biker jackets with a glitter based moniker taken from the Heligoland album.
To mark the launch, we curated a three week pop-up exhibition, hosted at the Albemarle Street flagship store. The ‘Progress’ exhibition showcased some of the Studio’s most iconic sleeve works, each reimagined as a 3D lenticular piece. From the outset, it was important that the original artworks should be presented through a diverse range of media; print, clothing, lenticular and of course, as the physical objects themselves.
Each of these new lenticular works combined new technologies with traditional processes – inviting people to experience this well-known imagery in a new and unfamiliar way. Part physical, part digital the works highlighted our changing interaction with music-based imagery over the Studio’s 20 years – what we once held in our hands as a tactile object is now, more than often experienced on screens and devices.
